"Give me 1 vote and 1 rupee", Independent candidate of Sulur by-election seeks public help

Coimbatore: Candidates of various political parties including independent candidates are busy filing nominations for the Sulur by-election scheduled for May 19.

Coimbatore: Candidates of various political parties including independent candidates are busy filing nominations for the Sulur by-election scheduled for May 19.

Prabhakaran of Coimbatore's Elachipalayam is contesting in this election as an independent candidate with the slogan “Let ethical politics bloom, on behalf of 'People’s movement against injustice," as he puts it.

His novel way of approaching people of Sulur assembly constituency to help him file his nomination and earnestly work for the upliftment of the region has garnered the attention of the people.

In a bid to cough up his deposit amount of Rs.10,000 to file his nomination, Prabhakaran has sought the help of the public. The independent candidate was seen requesting Rs.1 from each person in Sulur to support him through WhatsApp, as well as in person.

With sufficient funds, Prabhakaran has planned to file his noimation anytime soon.

“AIADMK is contesting in the Sulur by-election for change of a person and DMK is contesting for change of regime. However, I am contesting for a larger idea, 'a political change'. In the Parliamentary elections, democracy was sold for money. Political parties have used the looted money to buy votes and capture power", alleged Prabhakaran.

"I am campaigning asking for one vote and one rupee from the public to bring change. My honesty is well-received by the public. I have promised to develop the water sources in Sulur and to preserve the dying textile industry,” he added.

Prabhakaran is known for constantly fighting for the causes like conservation of natural resources, bribery, corruption and alcohol. He also protested for the Avinashi-Athikadavu implementation project for 12 days and involved himself in the Jalikattu protest in New Delhi for four days.
